Cultural Involvement

Culture and science are closely linked to each other. A holistic education both in the arts as well as the sciences corresponds to the Humboldtian model of higher education. HHU and its members consider themselves to be a part of the extensive and very lively culture in NRW, in the Rhineland and in Düsseldorf.

As a Bürgeruniversität, it is a matter of course for HHU to be incorporated in the cultural life of the city and surrounding area, as well as to lend scientific perspective to art and culture. Numerous collaborations arise as a result – in the form of exhibitions, cultural events and other common projects.

Examples of Activities and Projects in the Area of "Cultural Involvement"

Film Festival
For over 15 years, students of Media and Cultural Studies at HHU have been organising the annual Düsseldorf Film Festival which now enjoys an international reputation as one of the best known short film competitions in NRW. Only a small portion of entries (last year there were more than 1000) can be presented to the public and the jury. The student team takes care of acquisition, design, PR, sponsoring and event organisation. The film festival substantially enriches Düsseldorf’s cultural programme and is a figurehead of both the university and the city.

“Junge Nacht”
In cooperation with the Museum Kunstpalast, History of Art students have organised a youth night at this museum for the last 12 years. This “Nacht der jungen Künste (Night of the Young Arts) hosts discussions surrounding art and contributions from artists of different directions while musicians guarantee for suitable atmospheric background. HHU students organise the larger youth night events thus contributing to the cultural life of Düsseldorf’s youth and connecting HHU to Düsseldorf’s museum world.
