Call for project proposals: HHU funding for research projects with citizen participation

HHU funds research projects by HHU scientists that actively involve citizens and/or representatives of civil society organisations in their projects. This can range from the joint development of a project proposal ("co-design", "multi-stakeholder approach") to participation in the implementation of projects ("Citizen Science") and transfer into application.

The programme is open to all research disciplines and comprises two funding lines. A total of EUR 140,000 is made available for project funding this year.

The ways citizen can get involved in projects may differ depending on the field of research and the specific research project, but the participation of citizens should always generate genuine added value for the research project. Citizens should be able to contribute to research results through their skills, expertise and willingness to participate.

The funding programme also aims at demonstrating scientific processes and the way researchers work to the public and thus at breaking down barriers between science and society.

Call opening: 11 June 2019

Deadline for submission of proposals: 16 September 2019

Funding line 1: Funding of research projects

  • Funding of research projects with a participatory approach: active participation of citizens and/or actors from organised civil society required
  • Eligibility criteria: HHU scientists at all career stages holding at least a PhD
  • Funded activities: personnel, material, travel and publication costs
  • Funding: max. EUR 60,000 per project
  • Funding period: max. 24 months

Funding line 2: Support for the application phase for third-party funding (start-up funding)

  • Funding of the involvement of citizens and/or actors of organised civil society in the application phase for third-party funding: joint development of research questions and the "co-design" of project proposals
  • Eligibility criteria: HHU scientists at all career stages holding at least a PhD
  • Funded activities: personnel, material, travel and publication costs
  • Funding: max. EUR 15,000 per project
  • Funding period: max. 12 months
  • The aim is to increase success rates of applications in funding programmes that welcome or require multi-stakeholder participation in the joint development of research questions and the "co-design" of project proposals (e.g. in BMBF funding programmes or the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation), but do not provide dedicated funding for the application phase.
