Participatory Research

To strengthen participatory research, HHU supports its researchers through regular calls for proposals in the “Bürgeruniversität in der Forschung” (Citizens’ University in Research) funding programme, as well as through advisory services and professional development offered by the Public Engagement Unit.

Participatory research opens up new perspectives and promotes the social relevance of research as well as dialogue between academia and society. It makes science more democratic, transparent, and inclusive—and improves the quality of scientific findings through diverse forms of knowledge, a more comprehensive data basis and greater evaluation capacities. At the same time, members of civil society can contribute their own questions, expertise, and interests and participate in social developments. This strengthens trust between science and society and helps break down barriers.
