Society-oriented Teaching

As a “Bürgeruniversität” (Citizens’ University), HHU aims to encourage its students to enter into dialogue with society. It has been promoting socially relevant learning and teaching formats in all faculties through its “Bürgeruniversität in der Lehre” (society-oriented teaching) programme since 2018.

Society-oriented teaching opens up opportunities for students to learn, research and act beyond a university context. It aims to bring the mutual relationship between science and society to life in teaching by actively involving external cooperation partners and the public in the teaching and learning process.

In its role as a Citizens’ University, HHU is also offering its students a regular seminar on the topic of “Trust in Science – Understanding, Communicating, Strengthening” within the framework of the General Studies programme from the summer semester 2026. This seminar enables students to consider the topic of responsible science communication in a theoretical and practical way from the second year of their studies onwards.

The Citizens’ University blog, which primarily presents science communication projects that have arisen within the framework of teaching at HHU, evolved from society-oriented teaching. However, the blog also offers a platform for citizen science projects and other Citizens’ University activities.
